Understanding Common Asthma Triggers in Children

At Bezack Pediatric Pulmonology in Commack, NY, Dr. Brian Bezack works closely with families to manage pediatric asthma. Identifying what triggers a child’s symptoms is key to that care. Once triggers are known, we can reduce exposure and help your child breathe easier.

Common Asthma Triggers

Asthma triggers vary, but many come from a child's environment. One culprit is pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds, especially in spring and fall. Pet dander, found in animal skin flakes and saliva, can linger in carpets and furniture. Another trigger is dust mites, which thrive in bedding and upholstery and worsen nighttime symptoms.

Smoking cigarettes can aggravate airways, and cold air can tighten them during winter. Some children develop asthma symptoms after exercise, especially without proper warm-up or medication.

Reducing Exposure at Home

Less exposure starts with easy modifications. Keep windows closed when pollen peaks, use air conditioning, and wash your child after playing outside. If the problem is pet dander, keep pets out of certain areas and use HEPA filters.

To reduce dust mites, wash bedding weekly in hot water and vacuum often. Use scarves or masks to warm the air your child breathes in cold weather. Pre-treatment with an inhaler may be recommended for exercise-induced asthma.

Better Control Starts with a Plan

Managing asthma doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With the right plan, your child can stay active and symptom-free. At Bezack Pediatric Pulmonology, Dr. Bezack provides individualized care to help families control asthma and reduce flare-ups.
